The Collins Piano Forte Workshop offers concert tunings as well as routine visits, and specialises in Piano Fortes made before 1860.
The tools and methods for tuning such instruments are not only different from those used on modern pianos, but have also varied greatly in time and setting. The earliest Italian Piano e Forte Harpsichords of the early eighteenth century, the Saxon Flugel and the English square of the later eighteenth century, the Louis Philippe Piano giraffe and the Victorian concert grand all stem from the same basic principles, and beyond a common ancestor, share little. Consequently the approach to each instrument must be carefully considered; it is crucial to account for the age and history of a particular instrument, its design, condition and use. In the art of tuning (because art it is!) the employment of qualities of tone, timbre and resonances inherent to each piano to the greatest musical advantage also plays a big part.
The Workshop also tunes harpsichords, pipe organs and modern pianos, covers England, Scotland, Wales, France, and will happily accept requests from further afield.
