Restoration
The Collins Piano Forte Workshop offers all restoration services, as well as repair and spare part manufacture for historic keyboard instruments. A typical full restoration involves the following stages:
- Cleaning (dust and loose particulates)
- Structural repairs (where necessary)
- Other 'fundamental' repairs where needed (cabinet, wrest plank, sounding board, bridge, hitchpin rail)
- Action repairs and manufacture & fitting of missing parts
- Appropriate strings fitted, according to the stringing study (if the strings in place are not retained)
- Replacment of worn or weakened leathers and cloths (keybed, hammers, dampers, hinges)
- Keyboard levelling
- Cosmetic repairs and finish restoration (or replacement with historical varnishes & polishes)
- Tensionning and first tunings
- Action adjustment
- Second tunings
- Finishing (fine adjustments in the action, in voicing; elimination of parasitic noises)
- Fine tuning
- Polish
The Workshop employs traditional and historic tools and methods for each repair, thereby achieving both high precision of craft and conformity with the work of the original manufacturer of the instrument. The quality and close match of all materials used is also fundamental, at that is why the Collins Piano Forte Workshop takes great care in sourcing leathers, cloths and timbers. All the strings used are the fruit of several years of research and testing; they are made out-of-house according to specific ctriteria, before finishing and preparation for installation in a piano (or other keyboard instrument) in the workshop.
